Last week I reviewed 5 Project Management software based on the following criteria: Resources Management, Project Management and Ease of use. I will continue in this article with the other five applications I saw fit to easily manage your projects.

RationalPlan Multi Project

RationalPlan is a software management application from Stand By Soft Ltd. that puts accent on the project managers and their teams. It allows an estimation of the costs of a project, effectively manage budgets, keep track of the progress, allocate resources and analyze the workload for each resource. It covers any domain and it’s a great tool to complete the projects in time.

Standout features

Defines company-wide resources

It allows an in-depth analysis of the entire data with Project Portfolio view

Create inter-project dependencies

Resources Management

The strength in its resources management is the Check In/Check Out feature, a function that allows you to keep track of materials and objects, so you’ll always know where something is located. It has less features than Microsoft Project and it cannot rise to the same expectations, but his unique feature can prove more useful than it looks at a glance.

Project Management

Surprisingly, RationalPlan has a very small set of features and only provide the essentials for a consistent management application. However, this is a very good thing, since you don’t spend hours and days organizing and you can go out in the field and make things happen.

Ease of use

The lack of straining, tiresome features make the program very easy to use. Even someone who opens this application for the first time won’t have a hard time learning it.

Overall

RationalPlan is a great tool to successfully manage your projects and will definitely make any project manager’s life easier. Although it does not provide a large amount of features like Microsoft Project, it is capable to offer an effective management of projects.

ProjectPlan

Method123 released ProjectPlan as an easy to use tool for project management that has a lot to offer. It proves down-right that you can go a long way with a simple, high-functioning application.

Standout features

Outstanding Project Planning

Can integrate in Microsoft Project

Allows planning of suit projects of any size

Advanced tools in scheduling

Resources Management

This part is pretty much basic and does not offer many features. However, you can easily assign resources to different projects and different tasks. What makes it different than other applications that do the same thing? Well, you do this as simple as organizing your folders. In short, it works well for starting project managers, who don’t know yet the subtleties involved.

Project Management

ProjectPlan doesn’t want its users to be encumbered with tons of straining features and it provides only the necessary tools to get the job done quickly and effectively.

Ease of use

Method123 achieved its goal: to offer to its customers an effective and very easy to use project management application. It also allows you to quickly move to action instead of spending hours and maybe days only organizing.

Overall

ProjectPlan is an excellent tool to have at hand in project management. Its simplicity allows you to do great things and it has a very low learning curve. Since it can integrate in Microsoft Project, it can be very versatile in using with other project management software.

FastTrack Schedule

FastTrack is a project management software released by AEC Software that’s very handy for both starting managers and experienced alike. Its strength lies in planning, project tracking and reporting goals.

Standout Features

Easy project planning

No scheduling conflicts

Advanced goal tracking

Performance tracking

Demonstration of the impact made by schedule changing

Resources Management

FastTrack offers a complete set of features that assures you of an effective project management. It only lacks two features: Timesheets and Check In/Check Out, but that doesn’t affect its standing very much.

Project Management

Feats like recurring tasks and risk/benefits analyzer make this application simply amazing. Although if they would have included the automatic notifications, it would have been a complete set.

Ease of use

FastTrack is surprisingly easy to use, despite the large amount of features it has to offer. It is well structured and easy to comprehend. Its learning curve is pretty much low.

Overall

FastTrack Schedule provides a very solid set of features that will help you effectively plan any project. It does not offer many communication features. This however is strengthened in the resources and project management, so it makes up for it. In short, you’ll have a wonderful experience and you won’t get disappointed using this application.

Service Desktop Pro 2

Service Desktop Pro, released by Webtech Software & Services Inc., is a project management software that can cover a large variety of business areas. Some relevant examples are leads, billing, expense, customer service management, documents. It provides much consistency in management while not being dedicated to a specific area of interest, it works more like a universal tool.

Standout features

Can manage Project Types and Categories for better access.

Planning and execution of multiple projects and tasks

Allocate tasks and projects to team members

Can generate Gantt charts

Search Projects and tasks based on multiple criteria

Resources Management

Service Desktop is basically divided into multiple sections that can be accessed by the specific managers in their areas of interest: contacts, time scheduling, leads, billing, documents, expenses, projects, service and passwords. Each section has its own set of features that lead to different results. This application is structured in such a way to dampen the unnecessary time spent with extraneous things by the project managers.

Project Management

As I stated earlier, the Project Management section offers a great set of features and for this section are: keeping track of the project’s goal, dividing the project into tasks, allocate resources, set up deadlines and a comparison with the planned schedule versus the actual schedule.

Ease of use

If you want an application that quickly gets to the point with no eye-candy or pointless introduction, then get Service Desktop. It’s straight-forward and its goal is to solve a project manager’s problems. It could get more improvements in the future, but for now is a powerful tool for advanced and experienced managers.

Overall

Service Desktop Pro is a strong tool in the right hands and will prove itself as soon as you use it. Experienced users will find this application a pretty much complete tool in project management, although it does have a lot of room for more improvements. If you want a straight-forward application that does its job effectively over eye-candy and flashiness, then this tool is an excellent choice.

@Task

@Task is a web-based project management software that won the CODiE Award for the Best Project Management Software and joined the previous and current winners: Salesforce, Adobe, Novell and Sun Microsystems. An example of a successful company that makes use of @Task is Toyota, who manages their projects with this great application along the lines of Toyota standards.

Standout features

Portfolio management

Detailed reports and dashboards

Process improvement

Resource leveling

Auditing

Real-time projections

Document management

Automatic notifications

Works both offline and online

Real-time project status through reports

Integrates with Microsoft Project

Resources Management

@Task provides a strong and complete set of features that let you manage your resources effectively: organize resources into pools to get a better comprehension of the team capabilities in each area, check each of the member’s task workload in the shape of a grid, assign tasks to individuals, check members’ availability, visually analyze the jobs stack for each member and remotely establish the number of resources required.

You can determine conflicts and fix them automatically or manually with the Resource Leveling feature.

Project management

The welcome screen makes it easy to start for both starting and experienced project managers. A unique feature is the Favorites section, where you can simply “bookmark” the ones in your area of interest so you can quickly access them without browsing through the entire project; it allows quick searches for tasks, notes, status, approval and more.

The interactive Gantt chart and the real-time team task assignment are a strong feature ideal for large companies: check team members’ tasks and their workloads in real-time; plan and manage visually using the Gantt chart: assign roles, tasks and milestones with just a drag and drop.

Quickly build teams accordingly to their skill set and experience and availability, keep track of your expenses on projects or task, then compare with the actual ones and decide which ones are billable.

A built-in powerful feature is Earned Value Management View (EVM), an auto-calculator that allows monitoring of schedules in a structured, comprehensive way.

Ease of use

@Task is an outstanding and complete tool that will successfully complete any project in any domain with a moderate learning curve. The large variety of features are well structured, easy for anyone to comprehend. The interface is nice also, very user-friendly and suggestive.

Overall

@Task is a great project management tool ideal for large companies, where keeping track of each step is a must, so you can control the project’s direction at any given time. The real-time features are just perfect for everyone to be notified when tasks or directions changes arise and it allows a good communication between manager and his team or between managers and even real-time check of any member and his current task.

This is only a small list from the huge amount of applications on the market. Feel free to add your own software to the mix!

As a Project Manager, you surely want do an effective management plan for your projects. To come to your aid, we made a presentation of the Top 10 most useful software you can use to schedule, assign tasks, keep track (and more) of your project’s work-flow.

Tenrox Project Management Software

This application has a complete set of features unlike any other. You can go digging through its various interfaces and dashboards without getting a headache, all thanks to its well-structured creation.

Standout features:

easy-to-use project planning tool

the project plans are interchangeable with Microsoft Project files

excellent time tracking, cost accounting and billing features.

Resources management

Create a perfect team using the resource search function. Find the most appropriate, qualified and available individuals to complete different tasks. As soon as the project manager publishes the project plan, every member of your team can see their assigned tasks. In return, they can report an estimated time to complete their assigned tasks. This information will be used along with the plan to report on the cost and schedule variances. Tag your time entries as capitalized, charge-back, billable, R&D and other similar attributes. Also you can report n capitalized project time and billable versus non billable time and access profitability and productivity with various project cost/revenue analysis reports.

Project management

A great advantage is that you can manage your projects offline, so you can share your plan with your team once it’s finished. Publish, check-in and check-out are some excellent features that help team members to collaborate on the plan.

Ease of use

You can’t go wrong with this software! Although it has a very complex structure, anyone can handle it, even someone that doesn’t know what project management is.

Overall

From all the software management applications, this one is probably one of the best. It’s easy to use, brings a lot of features and it’s at a reasonable price.

Microsoft Project

This application is the flagship for any other similar software, because most of the project management software can integrate files with it, either by importing or exporting them into your preferred application. This feature lessens the learning of different software, since there are many professionals who are already familiar with Microsoft Project.

Standout features

Import/export Feature

Effective management of project schedules

Enables you to quickly become productive

Able to build professional charts and diagrams

Resources Management

Microsoft Project enables an easy management of both adding and managing your resources, essential for any effective project management. Easily create slots and assign them tasks as you would fill some data in a spreadsheet. Optimize efficiency by assigning tasks to the right resource: Microsoft Project allows you to keep info about your employees (such as skill sets and resumes).

Project Management

Microsoft Project doesn’t provide many features, but it holds the necessary tools to effectively manage any project. A practical tool is the expand-and-contract feature, that allows you to easily browse through your project and get a better overall view without scrolling through hundreds of tasks and milestones.

The scheduling feature includes calendars for a day-by-day breakdown of tasks, timelines for an overall view of the project, and events for specific milestones within the calendar.

But the interactive Gantt chart makes it easy to comprehend. You can update your project and easily adjust it right on the graph!

Up-to-date reports are available in Microsoft Project, so you can keep track of statistics, financial status and employees work loads.

Ease of use

Microsoft Project focuses on four points in project management: Task, resource, Track and Report. You can easily navigate through them and you can find any info you need with just a click.

The spreadsheet-like interface allows you to input data using your keyboard. Add tasks, milestones, dates and resource assignments quickly without having to click into every field.

The interactive Gantt chart is really handy to easily update the progress of your tasks, changing their dates or their completing order.

Overall

Microsoft Project provides the necessary tools needed to assign tasks, manage resources and complete the project on schedule within the budget limits. Also you can integrate your work into mostly any project management software.

Project KickStart

Project KickStart is a project management software that can easily integrate with other software like Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Word, Microsoft Prokect, WBS Cart and MindManager. It is very useful for basic project planning, but does not provide many features like resources management.

Standout Features

Six-step plan creation wizard

QA process

Free sample projects

Resources Management

KickStart has a user-friendly interface with tabs for every aspect of a project, except the resources tab. A “People” tab is included, but it’s not even close to an effective management tool.

Project Management

KickStart offers a very simple UI, organized in tabs. The wizard just walks you through the project plan: picking goals, assign tasks and dates and show obstacles that could prevent the project’s smooth flow.

After running through all the tabs, you can keep track and edit your project in the resulting Gantt chart.

Ease of use

Very easy to install, easy to navigate and visually pleasing, KickStart is a very good tool. It simply runs your through the entire management plan and it provides an excellent comprehension and overall view.

Overall

Project KickStart is a great tool for smaller projects that probably have a single project manager, and does not require much collaboration with other managers or with a CEO.

MindView 3 Business

MindView has a spreadsheet-like layout, so you can easily add, edit or delete tasks without clicking each cell. A very useful feature that sets it apart from other software is the MindMap option: you can see your project in brainstorming bubbles and see how tasks are related to milestones.

Standout Features

Brainstorming

Multimedia

Calculation

Resources Management

It’s easy to add or remove human resources with just a click. Easily import resources directly from Microsoft Outlook or add them from your tasks list. Just be careful when you add resources, MindView does not allow you to make groups or sort them by skills or departments.

Project Management

MindView includes the standard project management elements: Tasks, Calendars and Budgeting, but it lacks recurring tasks and auto notifications to check the project progress.

The strength of this application lies in its different views of the project: tasks list, Gantt chart, mind map, timeline and outline. This allows a better overall view and the interactive map allows manual data input without opening the task list.

Ease of use

MindView has a very low learning curve. It simply leads you directly to a new project or existing ones. The spreadsheet-like task list and interactive Gantt charts allow you to easily update your project info.

Overall

Easy to learn, MindView offers a view through its different visual options that allows any user to comprehend rapidly his project’s work-flow. Although it does not provide many features, you can easily and effectively complete any management plan.

Genius project for Domino

Genius project is a high-functioning project management software that can be use by both experienced computer users and beginners alike.

Standout features

User-friendly user interface

Complex charts

Budget planning dashboard

Auto E-mail notification

Resources Management

The complex and detailed dashboards, charts and sets of views allow you to have a good idea of resource assignments. Easily make adjustments or substitutions as you see fit. Properly assign staff for your tasks using the matrix planning. Assigning tasks to the right person is no longer a laborious issue with the resource search function. With this tool, you can perform a quick search for potential members and you can diminish their number by sets of skills or availability. You can gather up the perfect team in a very short amount of time!

Project Management

This application provides extensive offerings in dashboards and reporting, risk and change management, document management, demand management, invoicing, cost and budget managing, project tracking, time and expense tracking, planning and project portfolio management.

Ease of use

Although it has a lot of functions explained in hundreds of pages, it’s easy to comprehend. There are no confusing or disorienting features at all.

Overall

Genius project offers a complete set of features needed for a thorough, in-depth management planning.

How many of you, designers or photographers, needed a quick retouch of a picture you just took without spending tons of money on software you’re not probably using very often?

Well, just for this matter, the online free photo editor websites come to our help! Quick and easy to use, they have some basic tools and presets. You can re-size, crop, rotate, adjust noise, luminosity, correct red-eye effect, distorts, different filters, frames, doodles, text and many more great stuff.

Thus said, let’s dig in!

One of my favorite sites of this kind is Picnik. And I’m going to tell you why. First of all, it has a very appealing, fresh design and very user-friendly. Simple and attractive.

In the “Library” section, you can upload practically from anywhere, whether is from your computer or on the web. The “Edit” section contains quick manipulation tools like exposure, sharpening, colors and red-eye effect. And for the users unfamiliar yet with photo editing, in each tab there’s a auto-fix button.

In the “Create” tab you’ll find frames, quick photo effects that usually would take a while to do manually: frames, masks, slide shows, focus changes and more. The “Advanced” tab contains Levels, Curves, Dodge and Burn, similar to the ones in Photoshop.

Here is are some portraits edited with the quick autofixes.

The original image.

Autocolors preset. It takes the dominant color and turns it into a filter.

Autofix preset.

8% Sharpen.

I’ve played around with more photos, with a larger variety of colors and I still get pretty good results. Also, the advanced tools similar to the Photoshop ones are satisfying; they are a bit more simple, but they get the job done.

It’s a very enjoyable site, practical, useful and fun to play with.

Another cool photo editing site is Fotoflexer. It’s similar to Picnik, but with a different user interface. It provides similar sets of filters, but in a more compact way.

The best section of the site is in the “Geek” tab, where the goodies are: smart resizing, curves, levels, morphing and smart cutouts.

I edited the same image and i got the same results as in Picnik, so I wont post them. I can’t wait till they finalize the Curves tool (it’s in Beta at the moment), I want to see how it works. I mean, a replica of Curves from Photoshop free and online? Count me in!

A third site that does online photo editing is Lunapic. It has a large gallery of effects in very compact lists. This site is not useful for your casual user or site visitors, for it does not provide interactive previews of what you are about to do. In return, advanced users of photo editing software would find this a meadow of heaven: lots of details and parameters in which an average user would drown. Visit this site if you like to play around with numbers.

A great tool for advanced users only!

Pixlr is your basic Photoshop in a web page. And a very cool thing about it is not only the familiar UI from Photoshop, but it also provides the menus in 13 different languages! It’s a very useful tool if you want to do a quick photo editing when you’re not in front of a computer that has Photoshop installed or just want to play around with effects.

A great website! Awesome looks, user friendly, easy to use!

Phixr is another site where you can edit photos quickly. It’s effective if you want to do a very quick and simple operation, such as resizing, cropping, adding fun stuff or adding other photos in it. A simple site for simple editing. It has a UI similar to MSPaint, but each button will expand to a whole new menu. What I like about it is the compression of all photo adjustment tools into a single menu. It has Temperature, Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Hue in a single tab, which makes it very useful when you need a quick adjustment.

Freeonlinephotoeditor works as well for a quick editing. The site has a simple, yet cool look and user-friendly. It has the basic photo manipulation tools and some presets of special effects, but only a few are adjustable. The simple menu lets you learn its structure very quick and finish your job fast and easy. A site made for its practicability and not for eye-candy, just the way a visitor likes.

These are all great tools when it comes to quick effects and adjustments, feel free to use the one that suits you most.

The only disadvantage of all these sites is that they allow limited dimensions of a picture (about 1600×1600 px).

Whether it’s about business, vintage, music, buildings, abstract, backgrounds, people, seasonal, they have it!

Download some of the free samples and take a closer look. The level of detail even at high zoom-in is simply stunning! The line art is basically close to perfection!

About pricing?

Up to 3.8 cents/vector. That’s how low their prices go!

Subscription plans for tons of images are:

If you are planning to sell downloadable (or digital) products such as software, music, eBooks or any other kind of files here are the best shopping carts that can help you easily start your business with the right foot.

I’ve used and tested all the software included in this article and bellow is my personal opinion about each one of them.

Magento

Magento is a very powerful free open-source shopping cart that becomes really popular due to is  capabilities. Magento  is really extraordinary and it comes with some amazing features. Its flexibility and features makes it one of the best shopping carts at this moment. But because its really a complex software and somehow difficult to customize I wouldn’t recommend it for small shops that sell only a couple of products. The other thing is that it requires a lot of resources and if you don’t host with a company that is “magento friendly” you would need to spend extra on a vps or dedicated server. Supports downloadable products very well and gives you a lot of options. We use it in our online shop Desigious.com for more than 6000 products.

Cubecart

Cubecart is a cool shopping cart with lots of features. It has a paid and a free version. What makes Cubecart great is the community behind it, you will find a lot of free and paid extensions and templates. It’s easier to customize than Magento but it doesn’t have so many features. On the forums you can easily find any problem you may have. The free version lacks a few features but you will find free mods to add. This feature makes it almost as good as the paid version. Cubecart does a good job when it comes to downloadable items and you can have an unlimited number of products. A nice cubecart store is Estelle’s Cubecart mods.

WP e-Commerce

WP e-Commerce is a cool WordPress plugin that transforms your blog into a full online shop. There are a few other plugins that do the same thing and maybe better but this is definitely the most common. It integrates in your blog very well and has a bunch of cool features. If you want to expand its capabilities you have a few cool extensions that you can buy and create an awesome shop. If you have a blog and want to sell a few digital products this is what you need. Icondock.com is a good example of a really cool shop that uses the plugin.

CS-Cart

CS-Cart is a professional shopping cart with a lot…, I mean A LOT of features in it. Its has and ajax admin interface, is SEO friendly, has an affiliate program in it, gift certificates and more. This is not a free shopping cart, it costs $265 per license but for some it may worth every cent, you get a really good cart with lots of features. Go Media has a really cool implementation of the cart for their Arsenal.

Ubercart

Ubercart is an open source ecommerce package that integrates with Drupal. It comes with a lot of features and settings and of course with the community support behind this cool module. It can be enhanced with other modules that integrate seamless in Drupal. If you are used to the Drupal CMS this may be the ideal setup for you but if you are not, well… it may take a while to get used to it.

Virtuemart

Virtuemart is a free plugin that turns your website into a full ecommerce solution that integrates in Joomla and Mambo CMS. With over 1,5 million downloads this extension really rocks! It has a huge community and it can be extended with the help of other extensions made specially for Virtuemart. If you want a powerful CMS with ecommerce capabilities that supports digital downloads you need to use Joomla+Virtuemart. A good example for digital downloads is Tshirt-factory.com.

Prestashop

This is one professional shopping cart packed with lots of features and best of all is open source. Very easy to use and with a friendly admin interface makes Prestashop one of best shopping carts. The community for this software is very active and you get answers for your questions/problems really fast. The developers worked really hard to make this shopping cart a really fast, reliable and intuitive software.

There are a lot of factors that influence the decision in choosing the right cart to sell your products. There are many options to consider and you need to do it carefully.
That’s about it, there were a few more that I’ve tested but they were either very expensive and wasn’t worth it or really bad. If you know other that must be mentioned please do tell.

Every once in a while is hard to find work or maybe business is a bit slow so is good to have an extra income, a passive income. If you are a designer and you want to have a passive income here are few things that can help you achieve that.

Use the designs that that were rejected by your clients and sell them on Graphic leftovers or a similar marketplace.

Sell email services to your clients under your name with Campaignmonitor.

Sell templates, a handy list of 10 places to sell templates.

Sell photos or vectors on Shutterstock.com, Istockphoto.com, Fotolia.com or Graphicriver.

Design and sell products on Cafepress or Zazzle, not only t-shirts you can sell a bunch of other stuff.

Create a blog and add some affiliate banners to earn commissions or sell advertising if you have enough visitors.

Write an ebook and sell it.

Write articles or tutorials for blogs and magazines.

These are only a few things you can do, of course this takes time and the profit from this does not come over night. You can work on some of this stuff when you are between projects and spend your time more effectively and why not maybe even profitably.
